Home ventilation filter planner

Change the filters of a home ventilation unit (Komfortlüftung, MVHR) every 6 months, every 4 next to a busy road, in heavy pollen or with pets, and pollen or fine filters every 3 to 4 months.

Who made the unit?
The name is on the unit’s front, usually in a cupboard, the cellar or the attic.
Which filters?
The filter box or the last order says; if in doubt, standard.
What applies to your home?
Optional. The year goes into the service reminder’s note.

Your ventilation plan

Filters: fit new ones Every 6 months Zehnder changes standard filters every 5 to 7 months, every 6 by its own FAQ1,2. Under good conditions Minergie says once a year can do5; we stay with the makers’ six months.
In between: look at them Every 3 months Look at the filters every 3 months in between: Helios says so, and Zehnder says every 12 weeks6,2. Cleaning only shakes off coarse dirt; the fine dust stays, so the filters are replaced, not washed2,4.
Professional service Every 2 years Zehnder recommends a professional service every two years, and a cleaning of the air ducts every 8 to 10 years1. Zehnder Switzerland’s service contract visits once a year3.

How we worked this out

Standard filters. Every source lands near six months. Zehnder says every 5 to 7 months, and every 6 in its FAQ1,2; Helios says after six months at most6; Vallox about every six months, at least twice a year7; Minergie two changes a year as a rule, and perhaps one under good conditions5. We plan 6 months, as SpickSpan counts a month: 30 days.

More often. Minergie says a busy road or above-average pollen means more frequent changes5, up to three times a year depending on location4: every 4 months. Vallox says more often near a busy road, with pets or with someone allergic, but gives no number8, so pets and allergy take the same 4 months. That is our reading, not a maker’s figure.

Pollen and fine filters. Zehnder changes finer filters, such as pollen or hygiene filters, every 3 to 4 months1. No other source we read gives a figure for them, so we use Zehnder’s for every maker: 4 months, or 3 with a busy road, pollen, pets or allergy.

In between. Helios looks at the filters every three months6, Zehnder every 12 weeks2. Cleaning only removes coarse dirt and the filters are single-use, so they are replaced, not washed2,4.

The long cycle. Zehnder recommends a professional service every two years and a cleaning of the air ducts every 8 to 10 years1; its Swiss service contract visits yearly3. Helios checks the heat exchanger and condensate drain once a year6. Vallox cleans the heat-recovery cell every 1 to 2 years, and we plan the longer end7. Minergie wants a professional check every 3 to 5 years and the ducts inspected about every 64. SpickSpan counts intervals up to 2 years, so for every maker but Zehnder that check becomes a yearly look at the date, with the years of the next check in its note.
