Your vacuum’s parts

Filter and brushes: clean them Every week iRobot: once a week, twice a week in homes with pets1. Empty the bin after every run.
Filter: replace it Every 2 months iRobot: every 2 months1,2.
Brushes: replace them Every year iRobot: every 6 to 12 months1. We take the long end; at a run every day we’d take the short end.
Corner brush: replace it Every 3 months iRobot: every 3 months for the s Series corner brush2; for the i Series edge brush it gives only a monthly clean1.
Front caster wheel: replace it Every year iRobot: every 12 months1,2.
Sensors and charging contacts: wipe them Every month iRobot: once a month1.

How we worked this out

Robot vacuums. The makers give months, not hours, and say the real interval depends on use. iRobot: filter and brushes cleaned weekly, twice a week with pets; filter replaced every 2 months, brushes every 6 to 12, the s Series corner brush every 3, the caster wheel every 12; sensors and contacts wiped monthly1,2. Roborock: main brushes and filter cleaned every 2 weeks; main brushes and filter replaced every 6 to 12 months, the side brush every 3 to 6, mop cloths every 1 to 3 on newer docks and 3 to 6 on the S5 Max3,4. Ecovacs: weekly cleaning; main brush every 6 to 12 months, side brush and filter every 3 to 6, a washable mop pad every 50 washes6.

Where a maker gives a range, we take the short end if the robot runs every day and the long end otherwise. That rule is ours, not the makers’. Roborock’s app counts hours on each part5, and third-party docs quote hour limits for it, but we couldn’t find those limits on a Roborock page, so they are left out; if your app shows a part’s remaining life, go by that.

Miele bagged vacuums. The HEPA AirClean 50 exhaust filter has a timestrip that fills after about 50 hours of use, which Miele says is about a year of average use; we divide 50 hours by your weekly hours and stop at a year. The motor-protection filter is changed whenever you open a new pack of bags, which holds 4 bags, one motor-protection filter and one AirClean exhaust filter7. SpickSpan can count the bags, so that chore runs on bags, not days.

Dyson cordless. Wash the filter in cold water at least once a month, more often with fine dust or mostly MAX mode, and let it dry for at least 24 hours8.

These are the makers’ figures for typical use. If your appliance’s manual or its own indicator says otherwise, go with that.
